2010 Convention Information
Dentistry In Paradise

The 2010 Caribbean Convention is being hosted from 8th - 11th April 2010 under the auspices of Caribbean Dental Programs Inc. at the Grand Barbados Beach Resort.

Full Registration covers the Congress Lectures, coffee breaks, lunches, afternoon breaks, the social evening at the Plantation Restaurant with a cultural show and dinner and the cocktail evening with opening ceremony. Delegates who do not want full registration can register daily and will be entitled to only attend that day's programme inclusive of breaks. The organising company cannot be held liable for any programme changes that may occur due to unforeseen circumstances. Cost is listed in Barbados dollars whose equivalence is 2:1 exchange for the $US ($1.00 US =$2.00 BDS).

The Convention has many highlights that include:
  1. BOOT CAMP. World renowned Anita Jupp and LeeAnn Shipowick of Advanced Dental Education Institute (ADEI) will run the Dental Business BOOT CAMP on Saturday 10th April 2010. This camp is for all members of the profession who must take responsibility for the success of their practice. Practitioners are encouraged to bring all of their staff to this session so that maximum benefit will accrue to their practices. Ms Jupp & Shipowick will also lecture on Sunday 11th April 2010 on "Beating The Economic Crunch" and "The New Wave of Dental Hygiene".
  2. IMPLANT DENTISTRY. Professor Samer Abi Nader of McGill University will make presentations which are of general importance for all potential and accredited dental implantologist. His programme will be preceded by a presentation by Dr. Lindel Brookes on "Immediate Loading". This day's programme will be dedicated to implants on Sunday 11th April.
  3. ORAL PATHOLOGY. Professor Crispian Scully, Dean of The Eastman Dental Institute (EDI) will provide a series of insightful and practical lectures which will be of great importance not only to general dental practitioners but to all members of the dental profession on Thursday 8th April 2009. Dentists, Hygenists, Technicians, Auxiliaries, Dental Surgery Assistants, Dental and Medical students should not miss this. Delegates wishing to view his complete CV are requested to go to Professor Scully's website. His presentation will be preceded by Dr. Adrian Richards, a local oral surgeon, who will speak on "Interesting cases in Barbados."
  4. DENTAL PERSPECTIVES. Professor Ryle Bell, who is the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in the College of Dentistry at Howard University, will address "The Challenges of Oral Reconstruction" on Thursday 8th April and then "Dental Education Perspectives" on Saturday 10th April.
  5. ENDODONTICS. Dr. Shivaughn Marchan is a lecturer at the University of the West Indies, the only English speaking dental institution within the Caribbean. She is also a graduate of EDI and will give a presentation on Friday 9th April 2010 related to her research topic entitled "Restoration of the Endodontically Treated Tooth".
  6. PAEDODONTICS. On Friday 9th April 2010, Professor George Thomas (the Director of the Postdoctoral Program in Paediatric Dentistry at Howard University) will give two important lectures on "Space Supervision and Management in a Growing Patient" and "Management of Dental Trauma in Children".
  7. CARIOLOGY Professor Edwina Kidd is an internationally renowned Carioloist who has recently retired from Kings College, University of London. She will give two lectures entitled "Understanding Caries" and "The Role of the Operative Dentistry in Caries Control" on Friday 9th April 2010.
  8. PERIODONTICS. Dr. Shaun Ramlogan, a lecturer at the University of the West Indies is another graduate of EDI and will lecture on "Periodontics in Genteral Practice" and "Crown lengthening Surgery" on Saturday 10th April.
  9. PRACTICAL DENTISTRY. Dr. Aditi Desai is a clinical teacher at Kings College, University of London and currently works with the British Broadcasting Corporation. She will give a presentation on "Use of the Mandibular Splint for Sleep Apnoea" on Saturday 10th April 2010 followed by a workshop to demonstrate the correct manner in which such appliances must be designed and made. Dental technicians are especially invited to attend this course.
  10. PHOTOGRAPHY. Mr. Ronald (Ronnie) Carrington will lecture on "Photography, A Great Escape From A High Stress Environment" on Sunday 11th April. He is a most experienced photographer and lecturer and will provide the delegates with hints on how to produce a great photograph while demonstrating with his large array of slides of Barbados. His lecture will depict how photography can be used to relieve stress. Delegates are encouraged to join him after the lecture for a PhotoAdventure bus tour of Barbados and those with an interest in photography and who wish to see Barbados from a different perspective will have an opportunity to take photos at selected sites. The cost of the 3 ½ hour tour including lunch is $150.00.
  11. SOCIAL. The social event will be hosted at the Plantation Restaurant on Friday 9th April and will consist of a dinner, drinks (all inclusive), a cultural show followed by dancing with music provided by some local artists. Bring your dancing shoes! Persons not fully registered can attend at a cost of $180.00 BBD. Transportation to and from the restaurant is included in the cost.
  12. COCKTAIL RECEPTION AND OPENING CEREMONY. OPENING CEREMONY & COCKTAIL RECEPTION. The Opening ceremony will commence at 0830 on Thursday 8th April at which dignitaries will be in attendance. Speeches and welcome addresses by a government official as well as a member of the Barbados Dental Association will open this 2010 convention. A cocktail Reception will be hosted by Dental Protection at the residence of Dr. Nancy Boodhoo at her residence in Sandy Lane the same evening from 1800 until 2130. Transportation will be available.

For ten or more fully registered delegates will be granted a 5% reduction to be arranged with the Convention Chairman (Dr. Victor Eastmond).


The cost, as listed above, permits all persons registered for the full programme to attend all of the lectures and the entire convention social programme (including the Plantation Restaurant). Persons attending on a daily basis can attend all lectures on that day and partake of breaks. This convention registration DOES NOT include hotel accommodation.
