About The Course: CDP has to limit this afternoon course to twenty four delegates who will be given hands-on participation while reviewing techniques. Registration will therefore be on a first-come, first-served basis but the quota will have to be limited. All registered delegates will be permitted to attend the morning lectures.

There will be a series of lectures at Accra Beach Resort in the morning followed by hands-on surgical cases at Rosedale Dental Centre in the afternoon. Delegates are requested to be present by 8.15 a.m. Delegates will be divided into three groups (of eight) in the afternoon under the supervision of each demonstrator with whom they can discuss modalities as the course continues. The course therefore targets dentists who are interested in learning the practical aspects of implants and their use as a modern replacement therapy. Lecturers will take you through the techniques involved with different systems and the advantages of their use. The techniques are not difficult and are being recommended for practitioners who would like to take their practice to a higher level. This programme will be most interactive and delegates who attend are therefore encouraged to ask questions.

Dental regulations in Barbados will not permit non-registered dentists to perform dental surgery but the delegates attached to each demonstrator will be required to assist during surgical procedures to thereby gain invaluable experience.

The course is recognised by the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) and attendees will be assigned ICOI credits for membership to ICOI. Prof. Ordonez will demonstrate a new regenerative bone system by Curasan and the Endopore implant system.

Hands-On Course 5: Achieving Quality Alginate Impressions
Presented by Pearline Rae, RDH

Monday 14th May 2007
Rosedale Dental Centre @ 1:30 pm

Cost for Dentist or Auxiliary: $80.00 US

About the Course: The course is aimed at dental auxiliaries who should thereafter be able to take quality impressions for their practitioner with the knowledge that many areas of dentistry today require the use of impressions which accurately display the patients' oral anatomy. An auxiliary that can produce a effective impression in an efficient manner is a valuable asset to any dentist and his/her dental practice. Dentists who send their auxiliaries to the "Achieving Quality Impressions" course will greatly benefit on many levels.

Miss Rae is a qualified lecturer in Canada within the accredited dental hygiene programme. She has lectured extensively in dental surgery assistants' programmes and has performed these hands-on courses previously. She has recently returned to Barbados to practice in her chosen field of Dental Hygiene and is keen to establish herself in her role as teacher/demonstrator.

The course will be limited to sixteen participants who will be divided into groups of two for the practical session. Each group will be allocated to their own dental chair at Rosedale Dental Centre. The course will consist of a lecture on the material before delegates are allowed to take impressions on each other. Impressions will be taken of both the upper and lower jaws in disposable trays which can be taken by the delegates after the course. The workshop will present uses, varying techniques, and advances in technology to facilitate the production of useful impressions.

The cost of this workshop is $80 U.S. per delegate which includes the use of all necessary armamentarium. To ensure delegates receive an optimal learning experience, spaces in this workshop are limited to 16 delegates, thus early registration is encouraged.

Participants are requested to bring their own protective spectacles while gloves, masks, and materials will be provided by CDP at Rosedale Dental Centre.

Accra Beach Hotel & Resort @ 1:30 pm

Cost: $125.00.US Dentist
$75.00 Auxiliary

About the Course: This certified course is being offered through the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados. It is a "Heartsaver AED for adult and child". The course will run for approximately three and a half hours commencing with a lecture on the basics of life support and followed by practical demonstrations on a manikin, the use of mouth-to-mouth respiration, cardiac massage and correct methods in assessing conditions. It is expected that there will be one instructor to every ten delegates. Instructors will be trained doctors, nurses, paramedics/fire/and/or Barbados Defence Force personnel.

It is imperative to remember that any patient may collapse in any dental office. This normally happens in the waiting room and all staff (including reception) should have the ability to handle an event. It is therefore hoped that dentists will send all of their staff to this course.

The course will be limited to 24 delegates because of the room size. CDP invites non-dental participation especially since the course is accredited by the American Heart Association with a two-year validation. A certificate and a manual will be issued to participants at the conclusion. Delegates will learn much from this course and are invited to take the opportunity to participate in the event.

About the Course: CDP has to limit this course to twenty delegates who will be given hands-on participation in the placement of the IMTEC mini-implants, preparing a substitute lower denture to be attached to the implants and using a substitute acrylic material to retain the female precision attachment. This will be done on a Styrofoam mandible and delegates will be allowed to keep their mandible with implants and denture thereafter. Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis as this course is normally heavily subscribed.

This course is for any general dental practitioner who is interested in learning the practical aspects of placement of implants, their use in stabilising loose lower dentures, and the advantages of their use. The technique is not difficult and is being recommended for practitioners who would like to take their practice to a higher level. The two lecturers/demonstrators are highly recommended by Imtec and will also be on hand to answer any queries.

The course will concentrate on the correct methodology in the placement of implants by delegates into a synthetic mandible using the specified implants. This "hands-On" experience will instil confidence for persons who have never placed implants while providing delegates with an experience of the Sendax mini implant placement to assist denture retention. This technique is not expensive and its usage is growing rapidly. Delegates are invited to get on board now and not miss this boat.

The course is recognised by the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) and attendees will be assigned ICOI credits for membership to ICOI as well as a certificate from IMTEC Implant Corporation on the use of their system.

Hands-On Course 8: Rubber Dam Application

Hands-On Course 8: Rubber Dam Application
Presented by Pearline Rae, RDH
Tuesday 15th May 2007
Rosedale Dental Centre @ 1:30 pm

Cost: $80.00 US

About the Course: Many Caribbean dentists were trained in the use of the rubber-dam during their undergraduate dental training. CDP have been requested to run a refresher hands-on course on the use of the rubber dam in light of the increased demand for cross infection control and safety within the dental practice. The course is aimed at both dentists and auxiliary CDP would like to ask that dental practitioners permit their dental surgery assistants to attend this course so that the nurses will be able to place the rubber dam while the dentist continues his/her other routines. This will not only be cost effective for the dentist who wants to increase his profit margin but will become an impressive method to ensure patients that their welfare and health safety is guaranteed.

It must be remembered that dentistry in recent years has been technique sensitive requiring a dry field as well as maintenance of asepsis for both the patient and the operator. Effective and efficient application and removal of rubber dam barriers by dental auxiliaries increases the efficiency and productivity in a dental practice. Furthermore, dentists will have a higher success rate during restorations, with improved visibility, and decreased operator fatigue due to the efficacy of their trained auxiliary.

This session encompasses a lecture followed by a hands-on component in which delegates will learn techniques for the effective application and removal of rubber dam. A review of purpose, techniques and new products and material on the market will be presented prior to the practical demonstration, and an opportunity for delegates to obtain hands on practice with an instructor to delegate ratio of 4:1.

The cost of this workshop is $80 U.S. per delegate which includes the use of all necessary armamentarium. To ensure delegates receive an optimal learning experience spaces in this workshop are limited to 16 delegates, thus early registration is encouraged.

About the Course: This course will be held at Rosedale Dental Centre. CDP has to limit this course to fourteen delegates who will be given/demonstrated hands-on participation and review techniques. Registration will therefore be on a first-come, first-served basis but the quota will have to be limited.

Mr. Vodopivec is the X-Ray Quality Manager of Genex Radiographic Equipment Ltd. He will share his immense knowledge with participants of this course which will commence with a lecture on the basics of intraoral radiography before delegates are provided the opportunity to take radiographs on each other. The group will be divided into pairs for this exercise. The most difficult of these procedures is the taking of a periapical radiograph of a lower wisdom tooth and this and other techniques will be discussed and demonstrated in conjunction with quality control, storage and safety.

Dentists are encouraged to attend but since it is accepted that most radiographs are taken by dental surgery assistants, all auxiliaries are invited to participate.

Hands-On Course 10: Basics in Endodontic Therapy
Presented by Dr. Jose Barros
Thursday 17th May 2007
Accra Beach Hotel & Resort @ 1:30 pm

Cost: $150.00 US

About the Course: Clinicians attending this course will need to provide at least two teeth, one of which must be a molar. The teeth need to have their access canals opened to enable instrumentation and obturation.

This same course was hosted in Antigua in 2005 and was so well received that many Caribbean dentists requested it be repeated. The Antigua course provided delegates with informative methods of dentistry, including practical use of up-to-date endodontic equipment. This state-of-the-art equipment was most impressive in demonstrating the easy way for managing root canal treatments. As a result of the success of that program, CDP is proud to have Dr. Jose F. Barros organise a 2007 course with the sponsorship of Dentsply - Tulsa International who will act as the primary sponsor. The course will commence at 13.30 hours on 17 May. All delegates who would like to participate in this exciting symposium are requested to register for the course early, as only fifteen persons will be permitted to participate. When the fifteenth clinician is registered, the enrolment will close.

The course will allow delegates to
  1. Improve the art of accessing, preparing and refining root canals
  2. 2. Improve canal identification and location
  3. 3. Learn the advantages of rotary instrumentation
  4. 4. How to utilise safe instrumentation techniques
CDP gratefully acknowledges Dentsply - Tulsa International, who will supply the requisite materials and instruments for the course. Dr. Barros is likewise acknowledged for providing this most interesting "Hands-On" course.

Delegates are requested to bring one single rooted tooth and one multirooted (molar) tooth. Soft wax must be placed at the apex of the tooth and then placed in plaster of Paris or clear acrylic. The tooth must also have its access canal prepared to the pulp chamber.

Accra Beach Hotel & Resort @ 1:30 pm

Cost: $150.00 US

About the Course: Participants attending this course must bring at least two teeth mounted in acrylic or plaster of Paris. The teeth must have its access cavity made and delegates are requested to create a perforation in the furcation (if a molar) or laterally in a single rooted tooth. A wax ball should be placed at the apex of each tooth in order to access apically for a retro prep and fill.

Both apexification and apexogenesis in traumatic pulp exposures of immature teeth and iatrogenic perforations are treatments that have long been a challenge in dentistry with varied success in their treatment modalities. Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA), commercially called ProRoot, is a new material, which has undergone extensive research and is now accepted to be the ideal material for these difficult treatments. MTA has also proven to be an ideal retrofill material in apicoectomies.

The use of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) is very simple but because most practitioners have not been taught this technique in their undergraduate programme, CDP has therefore asked Dr. Barros to present this postgraduate course.

Participants will learn
  1. The characteristics, working properties and history of MTA
  2. Apply learned knowledge towards placement and manipulation in the clinical situation
  3. Gain experience in placing the material into perforation sites to repair
  4. Learn to identify and evaluate the prognosis of perforations.
CDP gratefully acknowledges Dentsply - Tulsa International, who will supply the requisite materials and instruments for the course. Dr. Barros is likewise acknowledged for providing this most interesting "Hands-On" course. The course will be limited to twelve delegates who are requested to bring one single rooted tooth and one multi-rooted (molar) tooth. Soft wax must be placed at the apex of the tooth and then placed in plaster of Paris or clear acrylic. The tooth must also have an access canal to the pulp chamber and a perforation in the furcation of the molar tooth and a lateral perforation in the single rooted tooth.

Dr. Eastmond is a qualified diagnostic radiographer and will share his immense knowledge with participants. This course will commence with a lecture on the basics of pantomographic radiography before delegates are provided the opportunity to take radiographs on each other. Delegates will be given the opportunity to develop their own film and keep it afterwards. Members of the Gendex team will view the radiograph and make comments on positioning etc and how best to avoid pitfalls in the future. This workshop will therefore demonstrate quality control. Other areas that will be covered will be radiation protection, storage and safety.

Dentists are encouraged to attend but since it is accepted that most radiographs are taken by dental surgery assistants, it is hoped that all auxiliaries will take advantage of this opportunity to participate.
