 Dr. Frank Prieels |
Forensic Hands-On Course 2: Facial Reconstruction
Sunday 13th May 2007
Accra Beach Hotel & Resort @ 8:30
Dr. Frank Prieels
Tuition ( this course only): Dentists $100.00 Auxiliaries & Police Officers $75.00
Dental delegates who would like to only attend all three of the forensic workshops on Sunday, will be charged $200.00 for the three "hands-on" courses while auxiliaries and police officers will be charged $150.00. Attendance to an Individual course incur a separate charge. If there is a large demand for the courses, CDP will have the courses repeated at no additional cost to delegates. Please note that the total cost for delegates who only want to attend the forensic programme for the entire three days (including the "hands-on" Sunday courses) is $400.00 for dentists and $275.00 for police officers and auxiliaries.
|
About The Course: It will be difficult to accomplish a hands-on course on facial reconstruction within the limited four hour session. Dr. Prieels will therefore present this programme in a lecture format with the use of a module to highlight how the facial reconstruction is done.
He will teach some anthropological measurements of the skull as there are many variables to be considered in skull-measurement which differs according to race, physique, sex etc.
Delegates are expected to also include members of the Caribbean constabulary for whom most of the anatomy will be new. The course will therefore be done in as basic a format as possible to ensure that everyone will be fully understanding of the protocols involved. At the conclusion of the workshop, delegates should be able to determine the origin of a skull through a determined analysis.
This course will be informal and interactive whereby delegates are expected to participate by providing as many features as possible during the session. The reduction in the practical component of this course is reflected in the fee.

About The Course:
Professor Bernitz was chairman of the bitemark working group in Oslo when international standards were set for bitemark analysis. He is currently President of the International Organisation for Forensic Odonto Stomatology (IOFOS) and has consented to run the bitemark hands-on course.
The course will consist of an introduction to bite marks in general, followed by the protocol when confronted with any bite mark investigation. The next hour will cover all aspects of bite mark analysis, with actual cases to illustrate the procedures. The last hour is a hands-on course taking photos, DNA swabs and impressions of different bite mark cases. The analysis techniques will also be demonstrated. Material for the course will be provided.
Delegates will have the opportunity to assess bitemarks, take impressions and determine actual measurements of the teeth involved. Each delegate is requested to bring:
1. Cast models of their mouth
2. Callipers which can be purchased from the display booth.
3. Digital camera
This course will be memorable as it is fast becoming an accepted part of criminal investigations.
Delegates attending this program will be eligible to attend a certification course that will be arranged in conjunction with PAHO/WHO in the near future.

Forensic Hands-On Course 4: Dental Identification
Sunday 13th May 2007
Accra Beach Hotel & Resort @ 1:30
Dr. Judith Hincliffe
Tuition (this course only): Dentists $100.00 Auxiliaries and Police $75.00
Dental delegates who would like to only attend all three of the forensic workshops on Sunday, will be charged $200.00 for the three "hands-on" courses while auxiliaries and police officers will be charged $150.00. About The Course: This course is one of the most important but will be limited to twenty delegates only. If however there is a heavy demand for the course, CDP will make arrangements for Dr. Hincliffe to do a second workshop.
It is essential that dentists realise their role in identifying any victim in the event of a natural or man-made disaster. Dr. Hincliffe would have given a didactic lecture on this topic on the previous day and this course will provide further guidance in how the identification process is done in line with Interpol recommendations.
It is acknowledged that the Caribbean is a natural disaster arena with tropical storms, hurricanes, earth quakes, volcanoes and the likelihood of a tsunami. It must also be recognised that the Caribbean depends heavily on tourism and it is imperative that the Caribbean dental fraternity be cognisant of the protocols that will be enacted in the event of any disaster which can affect locals and tourists alike.
This course provides an informal opportunity for delegates to attain and test their skills in a mock identification scenario in which they will interprets ante-mortem dental records, review comparisons with post-mortem findings in an effort to reach an appropriate conclusion. There will be interactive discussion and teamwork participation. Delegates will be divided into groups and will be provided with data which must be analysed to derive a conclusion on the identity of the victim.
This workshop will give the attendees the chance to appreciate the difficulties and responsibilities involved in the identification process. It will definitely provide an opportunity to gain experience (and maybe make mistakes!) in the supervised comfort of the conference programme. It is therefore considered the best place to learn about identification.
