2010 Lecturer: Dr. George P. Thomas
 

Dr. George P. Thomas Dr. George P. Thomas serves as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Howard University College of Dentistry. Prior to this appointment, he was serving as Director of the Postdoctoral Program in Pediatric Dentistry since 1994.

Dr. Thomas received his dental degree in 1976 from the University of Kerala, India. He has taught at the Howard University for the past 25 years, where he received his postdoctoral training in Pediatric Dentistry and the MPH degree. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry where he served as an Advisory Council member. Dr. Thomas has raised finance on three separate occasions through U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Title VII Training Program Grant for his postdoctoral trainees and salary for the department's program manager. He has encouraged his alumni to contribute funds to renovate the Pediatric Dentistry clinic which has now become a state of the art facility. In 2006, Dr. Thomas was selected to participate in the Johnson and Johnson/UCLA Health Care Executive Program conducted at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Additionally, twice he was the recipient of the Howard University, Fund for Excellence Grant. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, Pierre Fauchard Academy and a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. He continues to maintain a private practice in Washington, D.C.

Management of Dental Trauma in Children

This presentation is designed to update the general practitioner in new techniques to approach perioral trauma to the pediatric patient as well as refreshing the practitioner in older accepted methods of trauma management. Dental trauma represents injury to the pulp, periodontal ligament and supporting bone resulting in complex healing patterns. In this presentation emphasis will be placed on the effect of various common treatment procedures, such as repositioning and splinting of displaced teeth, pulp capping, and pulpotomy of crown fractured teeth. Finally the accepted guideline for treating the avulsed permanent tooth will be emphasized. The objectives of this course are to:
  • establish a diagnosis
  • relate possible treatment modalities
  • provide complete postoperative follow-up

Space Supervision and Management in a Growing Patient

Evaluation of primary and mixed dentition requires an understanding of all factors of growth. This course will present important take-home messages that will provide the delegates with efficient and better methods of performance in their clinical practice. During this presentation, the participant will become familiar with various drifting patterns and space loss that could occur with premature loss of primary teeth. Space management is discussed with an emphasis on the importance of mesial shift, leeway space, and sequence of eruptions to the proper development of the adult occlusion. . Upon completion of this course the participants will learn:
  • Space Maintenance
  • Space Regaining
  • Control of Arch Length
