Dr. Shaun Ramlogan attained his DDS from the School of Dentistry, the UWI, St Augustine Campus, Trinidad in 1996 and successfully completed the licensing examination of the Dental Council of Trinidad and Tobago (DCTT) in 1997. He engaged in General Dental practice within Trinidad for two years before embarking on postgraduate training in the UK in 1999. He qualified with a Master of Science (MSc) in 2000 and a Master of Clinical Dentistry (MClinDent) with distinction in 2001 both in the field of Periodontology from the Eastman Dental Institute, UCL, London. In 2005, he obtained his diploma of Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MFDS RCSEd).
Dr. Ramlogan is a member of the British Society of Periodontology (BSP), European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). He has served as an executive member of the DCTT in 2008 and 2009.
Dr. Ramlogan is currently employed as a lecturer in Periodontology at the School of Dentistry, UWI. He is responsible for the Periodontal section and examination of candidates for both the DDS and Dental Assisting Certificate Programmes. Exposure to surgical Periodontics, for DDS undergraduates and participants in the Lutheran Medical Centre Residency at UWI, is part of his responsibility.
His research interests within periodontology include microbiological flora of diabetics, plaque and bleeding indices, gingival recession, and general dental practitioners' knowledge and attitudes. Communications have been made to the BSP and EFP Europerio meetings.
Dr. Ramlogan works part-time as a Periodontist in private practices located in East and South of Trinidad. While he is very fanatical about appropriate non-surgical therapy, his periodontal surgical interest includes regeneration, crown lengthening, pocket reduction and mucogingival coverage.

Periodontal Management in General Practice

This lecture gives an overview of screening, diagnosis and risk assessment of the periodontal patient. Parallels will be drawn to actual practice of General Dental Practitioners within a surveyed Caribbean country. The intension would be to reinforce good periodontal practice based on international guidelines and evidence based data.
This lecture also intends to compare non-surgical versus surgical therapy based on outcome measures of attachment gain and probing pocket depth reduction. A Case report on the comprehensive management of a periodontal patient will be presented.
Crown Lengthening Surgery

The concept of biological width will be emphasized and the necessity for crown lengthening to maintain this parameter. Indications for crown lengthening will be discussed and mechanisms of achieving this will be highlighted. There will be some illustration of surgically achieved crown lengthening.
