2008 Lecturer: Ms. Pearline Rae, R.D.H.
 

Pearline Rae Ms. Rae has been practicing in the dental auxiliary field since 1989 and provided comprehensive dental hygiene services to the various communities of Toronto (Canada) until 2006 when she relocated to Barbados where she now resides and practices. Her experience includes teaching didactic and clinical courses in dental hygiene and dental assisting at the Toronto College of Dental Hygiene and Auxiliaries, Oxford College, the Canadian Academy of Dental Hygiene, and Career Canada College.

She completed her certificate in dental assisting in 1992 from Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology, Toronto, Canada and in 1995 she graduated from the same institution with a diploma in dental hygiene. In 2003 she completed a certificate in Adult Education from Brock University, Canada and in 2006, she went on to achieve a certificate in Local Anesthesia Administration from the University of Detroit Mercy, U.S.A.

Ms. Rae is a long standing member of the Canadian Dental Hygienists' Association, and holds certificates of registration with the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (Canada), as well as the Barbados Dental Registration Act.

Ms. Rae has lectured at the 2004, 2005 and 2007 Caribbean Dental Programs.

She has a zeal for excellence in dental hygiene education, and is happy to share her knowledge.

"Maximizing the Use of Ultrasonic Scalers in Dental Hygiene Care"
This course will be beneficial to dental hygienists as well as dentists.

Over the years the use of ultrasonic scalers has changed from solely using them for gross debridement of heavy supragingival calculus, to currently using them for a diverse range of treatment cases.

This presentation will provide an update on current ultrasonic scalers, ultrasonic inserts, and how to effectively use them.

Topics of discussion will include:
  • New products-cost effective instruments for periodontal instrumentation
  • Identifying various ultrasonic inserts and how to adapt them to tooth anatomy
  • Ergonomic operator positions for optimizing access and adaptation to root morphology, while minimizing operator strain
  • "Tricks of the trade" for improving visibility while using indirect vision
  • Techniques for minimizing client discomfort
  • Innovative ultrasonic scalers that deliver antimicrobial agents
