2005 Lecturer: Professor Soorebettu Ramananda Prabhu
 

Professor Soorebettu Ramananda Prabhu Professor Soorebettu Ramananda Prabhu, BDS; MDS; FDSRCSEd; MOMed RCSEd; FFD RCSIre; MFGDP RCS(UK); FICD is currently Professor of Oral Medicine and Associate Dean for Special Initiatives at the School of Dentistry, Faculty of Medical Sciences, The University of the West Indies which is located in Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies. He was born in India but is now an Australian citizen by naturalisation.

He received the Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree in 1966 from University of Bombay before pursuing the Master of Dental Surgery degree in Oral Pathology which he gained in 1971 from University of Bombay. He is a Fellow of Dental Surgery, Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh; a Member of Oral Medicine Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh; a Fellow of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Royal College in Ireland (Oral Medicine); an Honorary Member of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.

Since 1971, he has been teaching Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine at Dental Schools in Manipal India, Nairobi, Khartoum, Adelaide, Kuala Lumpur, Riyadh and Trinidad and Tobago. While in Trinidad and Tobago, he served as the Director of the University of the West Indies School of Dentistry during 1993-96. He has served on short term visiting academic assignments in Universities of Iowa, Papua New Guinea, and Benin. He received the Indian Council of Medical Research Scholarship, Commonwealth Medical Fellowship, Commonwealth Foundation award, British Council Academic Links Interchange Scheme Award and Rotary Foundation Award during 1970-1990.

He has published more than 60 scientific papers in scientific journals and chapters in books; co-edited and co-authored an authoritative book entitled " Oral Diseases in the Tropics" in 1992 published by Oxford Medical Publications; edited the "Textbook of Oral Medicine" in 2004 with Oxford University Press (India) as its publishers and has participated in several HIV/AIDS workshops in the Caribbean and overseas.

Professor Prabhu, better known as "Ram", conceived the idea to have the 2005 HIV/AIDS workshop. Caribbean Dental Program Ltd. arranged the entire programme and consider itself fortunate to have a person with his wealth of knowledge, manage the academic section of the programme.
