Dr. Nuzzolesse will present:
An International Perspective of Forensics in Dentistry
Dentists trained in forensic sciences can play an important role within investigations of crimes against humanity. Since 9/11 and other natural disasters, the identification of individuals and investigations into violations of human rights have undergone a paradigm shift for experts in forensic odontology. This discipline differs dramatically from regular clinical dentistry. Interpol, the world's largest international police organization, has established scientific working groups to promote best practice in disaster victim identification, and to establish universal procedures to be used in missing person and human identification cases.
Oral Care Workers Role in Abuse & Neglect Cases
Oral health professionals can be an important resource in the identification of child abuse and dental neglect. Practitioners should be aware of the physical and oral/dental warning signs which may indicate possible abuse. Greater awareness within the dental health team will assist in the recognition, documenting and prevention of such conditions, ultimately offering better protection for children and young people through early and appropriate intervention.
