"Evidence-Based Shade Communication"
Sunday, April 6, 2008 @ 1:30 pm

There is nothing more critical in the realm of esthetic dentistry than obtaining a perfect shade match for your patient restorations. You can have the most precise marginal fit in the world, perfect occlusion and a reliable, biocompatible material that wears even better than natural enamel… but if the shade is off, even just a bit, the patient will notice, and a remake is in the works.

Most, if not all of us, have studied the research and have a strong understanding of what truly matters when determining a patient shade: proper lighting, strong communication with your lab counterpart, and now electronic devices that cannot be fooled by tricks of light and digital photography for precise characterization. But ask yourself these important questions:
  • Do I determine shade correctly and communicate all the necessary shade information to my lab for a perfect restoration?
  • Am I giving my patients the most natural-looking restoration possible?
  • Are my patients satisfied that their restorations match their bleached teeth?
  • Do I have 100% confidence in my shade-taking ability in the anterior?
  • Am I aware that determining the proper value is the most critical element in shade measurement - and that a crown with the correct value can match well even if the chroma and hue are slightly wrong?

You will come to this special presentation with some or all of the answers to these questions - but when you leave, we guarantee that you will have new insight into the importance of shade accuracy and have innovative new techniques that you can easily use to increase the precision of your shades, communicate more clearly with your lab and assure your patients a higher degree of satisfaction.

The presentation will cover:
  • The historical development of shade determination and how the paradigm of shade-taking has been embedded into our behavior over the last 50 years
  • Evidence-based protocol for shade accuracy
  • Hands-on workshop for putting the new techniques into use, including
  • Surface texture and color
  • Translucency
  • Lighting
  • Digital photographic communication
  • Shade assurance

"Total Case Acceptance"
Sunday, April 6, 2008 @ 3:00 pm

All dentists are frustrated when they know more optimal dentistry can be achieved and their patients will greatly benefit from it. Failure to present our treatment plans is a universal experience but we can transcend it. Don't be limited in the dentistry you perform. Patients will say yes more often to you and then to your treatment plans when you develop relationships that encourage mutually agreed upon outcomes.

Dr. Mark Murphy will outline a tried and true pathway for achieving these relationships and optimal health outcomes while he entertains you with stories from his own practice. His perspective comes from personal success in developing trust with his patients to (1) avoid having dentistry looked upon as a mere commodity and (2) become their trusted oral health leader. He will share with you the values and emotions that are known to drive decisions to choose optimal dentistry, and he will explore with you the economic impact of increased case acceptance.
