Professor Lewis is Professor of Oral Medicine and Associate Dean for Postgraduate Studies at Cardiff University. He is also Dean of the Dental Faculty of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
Professor Lewis has published over 200 scientific articles and co-authored six medical textbooks. He has delivered more than 450 postgraduate lectures worldwide. In addition, he is Immediate-past President of the British Society for Oral Medicine, the Dental Member of the Advisory Council for Misuse of Drugs (Home Office, UK) and the Dental Member of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infection (Department of Health, UK).
His research interests include molecular analysis of candida; molecular analysis of Prevotella species and Streptococcus milleri group; bacterial pathogenicity and antibiotic susceptibility; orofacial herpetic infection; therapeutic use of antimicrobial agents; and prevention and control of cross infection.
He undertook his Pre-Fellowship training in (House Officer, Registrar) in Departments of Dental Surgery, Conservation and Periodontology at Dundee Dental Hospital from 1979 - 1983. He was a Research Fellow in Oral Surgery, University of Glasgow from 1983 - 1986 and a lecturer in Oral Medicine and Pathology, University of Glasgow from 1986 - 1992. he was senior Lecturer in Oral Medicine, University of Wales College of Medicine / Honorary Consultant in Oral Medicine, Bro Taf Health Authority: August 1993 - February 1998.

This lecture will present the spectrum of conditions that may present as white patches in the mouth. The clinical recognition and mangement of each of the conditions will be described with an emphasis on the detection of potentially maligant lesions and oral cancer.
