"Enhanced Non-Surgical Antimicrobial Periodontal Therapy & Periodontal Medicine"
Friday, April 17, 2009 @ 10:00 am

Contemporary periodontal therapy consists of treatment modalities aimed at arresting infection, restoring lost structures, and maintaining a healthy periodontium. The mechanical removal of bacterial plaque, calculus and toxic material is an effective means of treatment for most inflammatory periodontal diseases. Other adjunctive chemotherapeutic treatment modalities aimed at halting periodontal disease progression include use of locally delivered antimicrobials with sustained release devices, antimicrobial irrigation, systemic antibiotics and other host modulation treatment strategies.

This course is designed to update the clinician on diagnostic and risk factors associated with recurrent and refractory periodontitis. Current information regarding the influence of smoking, diabetes, cardiovascular medications and periodontal disease progression will be highlighted. Patient-specific maintenance protocols will be addressed in detail, including micro ultrasonic debridement techniques used in combination with local or systemic antimicrobial therapy.
