Dr. Aditi Desais will present:

The role of the General Dental Practitioner in the Management of Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea in Practice
Saturday, April 10, 2010 @ 1:30 pm

Sleep Apnoea and Snoring is an ever increasing and potentially serious problem amongst the general population.

While snoring has social problems and is considered to be benign, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) which is linked to snoring can lead to more serious conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, etc.

Until now, the GDP has not had any guidelines on how to differentiate between patients who need further screening and reference to medical colleagues, and those who may be treated effectively within the dental practice environment. This leaves them open to litigation and the MPS has now issued guidelines for appropriately trained dentists who may wish to treat patients with OSA and Snoring.

Mandibular repositioning splints can be effective for mild snorers and sleep apnoeics and this seminar will hopefully outline how to screen the patient and be able to determine when to refer on to a 'Sleep Clinic' or a Respiratory Doctor for further investigation and/or treatment.

This course will cover:
  1. Management of patients who snore.
  2. Medical problems that go with the snoring.
  3. Management guidelines for general dental practitioners
This lecture is followed by a hands-on session which will endeavour to help the GDP understand a relatively new but fast growing subject and also help the GDP make simple Mandibular repositioning Splints.
