Joan Crawford is the Director of the Child Care Board for the past eleven (11) years. She is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario, Kings College, Canada in the area of Social Work and Psychology. Ms Crawford is a member of the Family Law Council of Barbados, the National Council on Family Matters, the Monitoring Committee on the Rights of the Child, and a delegate to the Inter-American Children's Institute. Ms Crawford is a past President of the Barbados Association of Professional Social Workers.

This paper will address the philosophical approach to Child Protection, the role and mandate of the Child Care Board in relation to Child Protection, statistics regarding the incidence/reported cases to the Child Care Board, the recognition and management of such cases, the challenges associated with Child Protection and a way forward.
