Dr. Ryle A. Bell is a Professor and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in the College of Dentistry at Howard University. He is Barbadian by birth and emigrated to the United States of America in 1964 to further his education. He attended New York City Community College majoring in Dental Laboratory Technology graduating Magna Cum Laud in 1966. In 1969 he received his Bachelor of Science degree from Long Island University and continued his studies at the Howard University College of Dentistry where he received his DDS degree in 1973. On graduating he was elected into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor society as an outstanding student.
After graduating, Dr. Bell joined the faculty as an Instructor in the Department of Removable Prosthodontics where he taught for one year. In 1974 he was awarded a Louise C. Ball Fellowship and attended the Ohio State University to study Prosthodontics under Dr. Carl O Boucher, one of the world's most eminent Prosthodontists. He completed his thesis in one year (a feat which usually takes two years to accomplish) and spent his second year as a graduate assistant tutor. In 1976 he completed his studies at the Ohio State University receiving a Master of Science degree and his certificate of specialty. He then returned to the Howard University College of Dentistry and rejoined the faculty as an Instructor in the Department of Removable Prosthodontics.
For the next last thirty five years, he has taught on the faculty, rising through the ranks from Instructor to Full Professor, a rank which he attained in 1985. As a lecturer and clinician, he has received many awards from the student body, has presented many lectures nationally and internationally and published many articles in the dental literature. In 1993 he was selected by his peers in the College of Dentistry at Howard University to receive the Distinguished Teacher Award. In 1995 he spearheaded the college's accreditation committee resulting in the acquisition of a full accreditation to the college.
As an administrator, he has served the College both as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, the position he now holds. In addition, Dr. Bell is a manuscript reviewer for General Dentistry, the peer-reviewed journal of the Academy of General Dentistry where he reviews articles to determine their suitability for publication in that journal. He has also been a resource to Caribbean dental education by serving two terms as an external examiner to the University of the West Indies' Dental School located in Trinidad.
In 2005, he was honored by the Howard University College of Dentistry as an outstanding alumnus at its postgraduate seminar series celebration.
In addition to his role as a university Professor, Dr. Bell has maintained a private practice for thirty five years in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, specializing in Prosthodontics.
He is also involved with the March of Dimes where he has worked to decrease the premature birthrate in the Washington, DC area. He was the first Chair of the Board of the DC Division and served in that capacity from 2003 to 2007 when he chose to step down to pursue other challenges. Dr. Bell is also an active member of the Alpha Phi Fraternity and has been appointed to many positions locally, regionally and nationally. Every year he and his Alpha brothers orchestrate the Washington DC, Walk for Babies a walk which provides funds to fight premature birth and its effects on babies. He is also a member of the Sigma Pi Phi fraternity Beta Nu Boule of Northern Virginia. This is an organization with a very limited membership where a select group of professionals are invited to participate and targets young black males as a group in need of support and development.
Dr. Bell is a lover of the arts and is an avid writer of poetry. He has published one volume of poetry entitled, "Thoughts of love and other things." He has had several of his poems published in poetry magazines and has read on the poet's program of Howard University Radio WHUR-FM. Recently he joined Drs. Beverly Murdock and Daniel Moran in writing poems for a poetry chapbook which was offered to the dental alumni to help raise funds for the College. He is also an avid lover of jazz and is a member of the TPCB jazz ensemble where he plays alto, and tenor saxophones. He also plays Alto, Tenor and Baritone saxophone with the Takoma Park Concert Band where he serves as President of the Band.
Dr. Bell is married to Carley, his wife of forty years and together they have three daughters.

The Challenges of Oral Reconstruction will examine the difficulties involved in addressing the needs of a patient requiring oral reconstruction. The presentation will cover diagnosis and Treatment Planning, Endodontic and Periodontal considerations as well as Prosthodontic Rehabilitation.
Dental Education Perspectives

Dental Education Perspectives is a discussion which outlines the history of the dental profession and its phases of development. It also addresses dental education through the years and discusses current challenges and curricular changes. There will be some comparison of the British and American systems of dental education concluding with a look at the future of dental education and the role that dentistry should play in the health profession.
