Professor Brendan C. Bain Professor Brendan C. Bain, B.Sc. (Physiol.), MB,BS (Hons.), DM (Internal Medicine), MPH is Professor of Community Health; Head, Department of Community Health & Psychiatry, University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, Jamaica; Lead Coordinator of the U W I HIV/AIDS Response Programme (UWI HARP); Director, Regional Coordinating Unit, Caribbean HIV/AIDS Regional Training (CHART) Network; and Consultant, Centre for HIV/AIDS Research, Education & Services, University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica.

He is a former Wellcome Trust Research Fellow in Infectious Diseases. He has been a pioneer Clinical Infectious Disease Teacher, Trainer and Consultant Physician (Attending Physician) at the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), Mona, Jamaica since 1980. He has served as an advisor on Pharmaceuticals and Infectious Diseases to the Jamaican Ministry of Health over the same period.

While on sabbatical leave in 1989-1990, he was appointed National HIV/AIDS Staff Trainer for hospital and laboratory personnel, Ministry of Health, Jamaica, with financial support from USAID. In that capacity, he designed and led a series of on-site workshops and seminars for all categories of staff in the 21 public hospitals of Jamaica and their associated microbiology and pathology laboratories. He led the first national educational workshops on HIV/AIDS for health care personnel in Belize and the Cayman Islands.

He was Programmes Director of the Centre for HIV/AIDS Research, Education & Services (formerly called 'The Family Centre') at UHWI between 1993 and 1997. In August 1999, he started an out-patient clinic for persons living with HIV/AIDS at UHWI and has inspired the commencement of a similar clinic at the Kingston Public Hospital.

In 2002, he was named Lead Coordinator of the UWI HIV/AIDS Response Programme (UWI HARP) by the UWI Vice-Chancellor. He is the inaugural director of the Regional Coordinating Unit of a Caribbean HIV/AIDS Regional Training (CHART) Network, which includes centers in the Bahamas, Barbados, Haiti and Jamaica. He is the leader of the UWI delegation to the Pan-Caribbean Partnership on AIDS (PANCAP).

Professor Bain's research interests are: reinforcement of safe sexual practices in the context of HIV/AIDS/STI prevention and the development of reliable, low-cost methods of diagnosing and monitoring HIV disease progression. He is co-author of the book, Education and HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean (UNESCO and Ian Randle Publications, 2005). He has authored co-authored many publications on HIV/AIDS and related topics.
