2005 Lecturer: Dr. M. Alves
 


Dr. M. Alves Dr. Mario Alves attained his DDS in 1965 from the University of Sao Paulo (USP), Brazil. He subsequently completed postgraduate courses at the USP including a programme in Oral Histology, Oral Pathology and Biostatistics in 1966; Master of Science degree in Oral Rehabilitation in 1973 and the Doctor of Science degree in Periodontics in 1979. In 1983 he completed his Post Doctoral Programme in Oral Molecular Biology at the Center for Research in Periodontal Diseases and Oral Molecular Biology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).

Currently he is Clinical Professor of Periodontics, Director of HIV/AIDS Dental Program at the College of Dentistry (COD) and Adjunct Professor of Experimental Dentistry at the Biologic Resources Laboratory (BRL) at the UIC.

Dr. Alves is very heavily involved in dental care, education and clinical research of HIV/AIDS infection and its effects in the oral cavity. His Ryan White Dental Clinic has more than 5,000 registered patients, receiving comprehensive dental care.

He is the author of numerous publications and is world renown for his international presentations. He finds time to be a member of the COD Infection Control Committee and a member of the National Institute of Health (NIH) Center for Scientific Review.
