Dr. A. Enrique Acosta-Gío gained his Dental Surgeon's degree in 1978 at the National University of Mexico (UNAM) before proceeding to undertake postgraduate studies at the Eastman Dental Hospital and Institute of Dental Surgery in the UK. In 1985, the University of London awarded him a PhD degree in Immunology.
He was a Fellow Scientist at UNAM's Institute for Biomedical Research (1985-1990) where he worked on the development of immuno-diagnostic tests and protective aspects of secretory immune responses. He was appointed Professor of Immunology and Microbiology, and Head of Infection Control and Occupational Safety, at UNAM's Dental School since 1991 and represented UNAM's Dental School at the committees drafting the Mexican National Standards on "Prevention and Control of Oral Diseases", "Control and Eradication of Diseases Preventable through Immunization", and "Medical Waste Management", between 1993 and 1997. Since 1999, he has lectured on Infection Control to over 3,500 dentists working for Mexican Public Health Institutions, as part of collaboration with the Mexican Ministry of Health.
In 1992, he became a member of the Organization for Safety and Asepsis Procedures (OSAP) and since 1998, served in the OSAP Foundation's Board of Directors. In 2002, with the support from OSAP, he initiated a course leading to a Diploma Degree on Infection Control, at the National University of Mexico. This train-the-trainer activity intends to form specialised faculty for dental schools in Spanish-speaking countries.
Dr. Acosta is the 2004 recipient of the "Dr. James A. Cottone Award for Investigative Research in Dental Infection Control and Safety". He has many scientific publications that he has authored and/or co-authored.
